Eye Color Change Laser Surgery

During the procedure, a frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser (532-nm wavelength) is used to raise and lower the temperature of the anterior iris pigment 15 times in 30 seconds. The laser treatment causes photo thermolysis, which stimulates the anterior iris pigment, and cytokine and macrophage responses resulting in pigment removal through the vasculature, revealing the underlying stromal fibers of the iris. From a safety standpoint, it is important to note that the pigment is carried away by the vascular system; it is not released into the anterior chamber, where it could clog the trabecular meshwork. Laser eye color change surgery takes 8 days to complete, with one 10-minute laser session per day, and an eye exam before the surgery to make sure the patient is a suitable candidate. This procedure consists of one laser application every day lasting 10 minutes, and it will gradually take three weeks after the procedure for the treatment to take effect.
